New moth invades Italy vineyards

A moth with a taste for Chardonnay leaves, which has infested vineyards across northern Italy, is a new species of leafminer, scientists say.

The pest was first discovered by Italian scientists in 2006, but they were unable to identify it.

Now, by examining a snippet of the moth's genetic code, researchers have confirmed that it is a previously unnamed species.

The team published their findings in the journal ZooKeys.

The Italian team enlisted the help of insect expert Erik van Nieukerken from the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity in Leiden.

"We first turned to the [scientific] literature to find out what was already known, which was appallingly little for this group [of moths]," Dr van Nieukerken told BBC Nature.

He and his colleagues used a method known as DNA barcoding to examine a section of the insect's genetic code.

"I figured out that this one, despite being quite common in North America, had no name," he recalled.

The new species, which now bears the name Antispila oinophylla, had previously been confused with a North American species (Antispila ampelopsifoliella), which feeds on Virginia creeper.

Only the genetic studies revealed it to be a different species with a taste for grapevines. Its native range is across eastern North America, where it feeds on several species of wild grapes.

So far, the species has been found in vineyards in Italy's Trento and Veneto regions, spreading and increasing in population since it was first recorded.

Having observed the moths in the field, the scientists say that the insect seems to have a preference for the leaves of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Muscat grapes, but they added that the economic impact of this particular pest was not yet clear.

The researchers do not know exactly how the moth arrived in Italy, but Dr van Nieukerken said that it was very easy for the cocoons containing the larvae to be accidentally transported with plant material.

"They're very small and exactly the same colour as the leaves," he told BBC Nature. "So if you were carrying plants, you would probably not notice them.

The scientist said that another species from this same group had been discovered in commercial walnut crops and that more needed to be known about the insects.

"This group is very poorly studied," he told BBC Nature.

"If you know exactly what it is and where it belongs, if you know its evolutionary history.... you can understand better how to control it."

Rachel Crow Talks Up 'Amazing' Post-'X Factor' Career

'Everything just kind of happened at once,' 14-year-old tells MTV News about new TV and recording deals.

Her elimination from "X Factor" made for one of the most shocking (and tear-filled) moments of the show, and now breakout star Rachel Crow will be crying tears of joy thanks to a newly inked recording contract with music-industry powerhouse Columbia Records and a TV deal with Nickelodeon.

MTV News caught up with the spunky 14-year-old on Wednesday (February 22) to get the inside scoop on her new endeavors.

"Everything just kind of happened at once. It was really cool for me. I've never had so many things happen — it's just amazing," Crow said of her recent career developments, the first of which we'll see via Nickelodeon's new comedy "Fred: The Show."

" 'Fred: The Show' is so much fun to work on. The whole crew, the whole cast, everyone is amazing. What's really cool is on that show, you get to show both sides — singing and acting — which is right up my alley," Crow said of her five- to six-episode stint. "I'm loving the acting so much. It's really fun for me. I have a fun character. She's spunky and crazy, and she wants to be a star and her name is — drum roll — her name is Starr."

With regard to the pilot the network is developing around the bubbly singer/actress, Crow said the details are still being worked out but promised it will be something we've never seen before.

"The goal with the pilot is to reach boy and girl audiences, because that's hard to do. We're still deciding if it's going to be one topic or any topic. Hopefully my [character's] name is Rachel, I hope," she said. "It's going to be edgy and really funny. I want to land the moms and the dads too, so hopefully it will be a family show."

In between her work on "Fred: The Show" and her new pilot, Crow is getting ready to record her first studio album at Columbia.

"I want my first album to have a lot of high notes in songs," Crow said. "I want there to be upbeat songs and slow songs, I want it to be retro and very soulful and I want at least one of my songs to have a guy rapping in it, because that is just so cool. Maybe Eminem can rap on it?"

Family asks the community to shower teenager with brain cancer ...

Friends and family of Wesley Berry hope the community will shower the teenager with birthday cards this week.
Wesley turns 17 on Thursday. He?s battled brain cancer since he was 12 and has been through a ?trying time? recently, according to his Facebook page. ?We thought it would be fun for him to get lots and lots of cards in the mail,? according to the post.
His address is: Wesley Berry, 10040 Marengo Farm Lane, King George, Va., 22485.
Recent weeks have been tough for the teenager, who?s reacting to a different chemotherapy. He was hospitalized for several days with a high temperature, ?but he is bouncing back,? said his mother, Paula. ?Each day we see him getting back to his normal self.?
Wesley was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 12. Since then he has undergone two surgeries, 30 days of radiation and nine rounds of chemotherapy.
Tests in November 2008, 2009 and 2011 showed additional spots on his brain, his mother said. Wesley had been part of a new clinical trail with an experimental form of chemotherapy when the most recent spot showed up, his mother said. He had to stop that for 42 days and try a different form of chemotherapy.
He?s scheduled to resume the experimental drug on Tuesday at a lower dose.
In the midst of his illness, the King George High School junior has maintained a Relay for Life team called Win4Wesley. He and others raise money throughout the year for cancer research.
?He is an amazing inspiration for us all,? said Lori Bowling, a family friend.

Radio RADISIN, a private Farsi-language radio station based in Tel Aviv, airs Iranian music, poetry and current affairs shows aiming to spread peace between the Israeli and Iranian people ? regardless of who is in power in Tehran.

"We, the people in Israel, are a peaceful nation and not an enemy, or the 'little Satan' as we are described by the Iranian regime," said Shay Amir, the station's 42-year-old CEO, who left Iran for Israel after the 1979 Islamic revolution. "For 32 years, the regime has poisoned its people against Israel. We are here to tell the truth."

Before the revolution, Israel and Iran were close allies. Some 100,000 Jews of Iranian descent live in Israel today, many with fond memories and still strong ties to friends and relatives in their homeland. An estimated 25,000 Jews still live in Iran.

But now Israel considers Iran its most dangerous foe because of the Islamic Republic's support of Palestinian militant groups, its repeated threats to destroy the Jewish state and its nuclear program.

Israel, like the West, believes Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear research program is for peaceful purposes only.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly hinted that they would consider taking military action against Iran if they conclude the international community's current approach of diplomacy and sanctions fails. For the first time in nearly two decades, world leaders are genuinely concerned that an Israeli military attack on Iran could be imminent ? an action that many fear might trigger a wider war, terrorism and global economic havoc.

Despite harsh economic sanctions and international pressure, Iran is refusing to abandon its nuclear program, which it insists is for purely civilian purposes like producing electricity and medical isotopes.

RADISIN broadcasts 24 hours a day via the Internet, satellite and cable TV. It says 100,000 listeners tune in daily, including an undisclosed number from Iran, where Internet speeds are slow and many sites, including those of political opposition groups, are blocked.

It's not the only Israeli media directed toward Iran. Israel's state-run radio station has been broadcasting in Farsi for 50 years from a spartan studio off a narrow Jerusalem alleyway.

It too chats with Iranians ? via a switchboard in Germany to get around a ban on calls from Iran to the Jewish state. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has even named the "Zionist broadcast" as among those behind civilian unrest in his country.

RADISIN relies mainly on anonymous sponsors and donations and it airs some commercials. It takes calls from Iranian listeners who often criticize the regime in Tehran and express affection for Israel.

For fear of exposing these callers ? and having them branded as collaborators by the Iranian regime ? the station asked The Associated Press not to record the conversations.

Others in Iran have been less enamored by the Israeli broadcast.

"Twice from Iran, they hacked our website and caused damage, and because of this we decided to switch and air via satellite," said Amir.

Ah, Las Vegas, a wonderful city. It can be a great place for a writer. So many different opportunities for observation and glimpses into the personas of others.
??? I?ve seen the sun rise several times over Lake Mead, Lake Las Vegas and the strip at triathlon races and marathons. I've seen some great sunsets, too.
