Silver Lining launches its first Android app

A long time ago, when Flex mobile was still waiting to happen and hacks had to be performed to get things running on Android (ahhh, those were the days?), I managed to create a simple solar panel monitoring app for Android smartphones and the BlackBerry Playbook. That app was very basic and didn?t do that much, but it was free and still is available on the Google Play store (formerly known as the Android market)

For those of you who are not familiar with the app, it is a graphical representation of the current and daily power output of your solar panel installation. The app was called SolarLogger.

After some time reactions started coming in, asking for an update, because some things we?re clearly missing. And I agreed. I just had to find some time to update the app. And guess what, I?ve finally found the time to do just that.

Now the app is available with some necessary updates, but it is also licensed. However, the basic app still remains online for free. What has been changed?

For the moment this addresses most of the requests I have been getting. However, I will continue to develop this app for even more support for months overviews and such?

The new app is called SolarLogger Plus, because it is based on the free edition, with additional features, and it can be found on the Google Play store right now. You can go directly to the app by clicking here or by scanning the QR code below with your mobile device.

SolarLogger Plus

Comments, remarks and additional feature request are always welcome as I will try to update this app as it goes along.

Djokovic rallies past Stepanek at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Novak Djokovic is tough to beat at Wimbledon, indoors or out.

Playing the day's first Centre Court match Friday under the retractable roof, defending champion Djokovic rallied past Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

When a drizzle delayed the start of the third round, tournament officials decided Djokovic's match should be played inside. An odd spectacle ensued: The roof closed as the sun came out and outside court covers came off.

"I was a little bit surprised, when I saw sunshine, that the roof is closed," Djokovic said. "Obviously they're relying on a forecast that I don't think is very reliable here. But OK."

The No. 1-ranked Djokovic missed opportunities to seize an early lead, failing to convert his first five break-point chances before he lost serve at love to drop the opening set. But he dominated from there, breaking in the first game in each of the final three sets.

Also advancing to the second week was top-ranked Maria Sharapova. She rallied from a break down in the second set to beat Hsieh Su-wei 6-1, 6-4.

American Sam Querrey hit the last of his 21 aces on match point and beat No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 7-6 (8), 6-4. That second-round match had been suspended in the third set Thursday because of rain.

Kim Clijsters led 6-3, 4-3 when No. 12 Vera Zvonareva retired struggling with a cough. The unseeded Clijsters, who plans to retire after the U.S. Open, is a four-time Grand Slam seeking her first berth in a Wimbledon final.

"It's a pleasure to be a part of the second week of a Grand Slam, especially at Wimbledon," she said.

Americans Sloane Stephens and Christina McHale were eliminated in the third round. The 19-year-old Sloane Stephens was beaten by Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2, and the No. 28-seeded McHale lost to No. 8 Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-3.

No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Britain's Heather Watson under the roof, 6-0, 6-2.

Djokovic has the weekend off and said he might squeeze in a round of golf. His fourth-round opponent will be 34th-ranked Viktor Troicki in an all-Serbian match. Troicki beat No. 15-seeded Juan Monaco 7-5, 7-5, 6-3.

Fans were still buzzing about Rafael Nadal's second-round defeat, which ended under the roof Thursday night, when Djokovic stepped onto the same court. His slow start briefly stirred speculation about another upset.

"I was a set down but managed to make the crucial break in the opening game of the second set," Djokovic said. "And then I thought I played really well."

Stepanek, at 33 the oldest man left in the tournament, repeatedly played serve and volley and had Djokovic on his heels in the early going. Djokovic hit an improbable winner that skipped off the top of the net post and still lost the first set.

Then the match quickly swung his way, and the 28th-seeded Stepanek couldn't compete with Djokovic's mistake-free play. The Serb committed just 13 unforced errors in 221 points.

The match remained entertaining even as it became lopsided. One game in the final set lasted 26 points and had Djokovic smiling at Stepanek's unconventional style, which included a belly flop in pursuit of a shot.

"The fourth set from Novak's side was very impressive," Stepanek said. "I was battling until the end, but the fourth set I felt like no matter what I do on the court, he always answers."

The victory made it two in row under the roof for Djokovic.

"I thought I played great," he said. "But, look, this is an outdoor tournament, so I think everybody wants to play when the roof is open."

Perhaps not Sharapova ? she was outdoors struggling with her serve on windy Court 1 and sent one shot over the net on the bounce for a double-fault.

Has she done that before?

"I'm sure I have," she said. "A lot in practice."

The misfire came on break point and put her behind 2-3 in the second set. She rallied by sweeping the final four games.

Sharapova finished with five double-faults but committed only seven unforced errors on her groundstrokes.

"Considering the conditions, I'm pretty happy with the way I played," she said.

Sharapova won the French Open this month to complete a career Grand Slam title. She won Wimbledon at age 17 in 2004 and has reached the final at three of the past four majors.

The half of the men's draw opposite Djokovic opened up when two-time champion Nadal lost to No. 100-ranked Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Nadal had reached the past five Grand Slam finals and won his seventh French Open title this month. He also had reached the final in his past five Wimbledons, winning the title in 2008 and 2010.

His departure creates an opportunity for three-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick and Andy Murray, who seeks to become the tournament's first British champion since 1936. Both are on Nadal's side of the draw.

Hugo Barra on Nexus 7 first day pre-order numbers: 'It's Big!'

Android Central

Little more than 24 hours has passed since the official unveiling of the Google Nexus 7, and the subsequent pre-orders becoming available in selected countries around the world. It's pretty much a given that it's bound to be a popular device within the Android community, but, how popular?

The folks at Business Insider caught up with Hugo Barra last night at a press session at Google I/O, and asked the question a lot of people would be curious to know the answer to. How has the first days pre-sale gone?

While Barra wouldn't disclose specifics -- hardly surprising -- but he did say they were really, really good. Pressed for a ballpark figure, he simply said, "it's big!"

So, given Barra's position at Google, you'd be excused for thinking it's just a bit of positive PR. Well, we've some actual cause to believe him.

Our contacts way up in Canada -- a guy called Chris, you might know him? -- have informed us that the 16GB Nexus 7 is no longer being accepted for pre-order. Seems for that, you now have to sign up to email alerts to let you know when they're available.

So far, we've not heard any further reports of the pre-sale devices going off sale anywhere else in the world, but that's not to say they won't follow suit soon. If you want one at launch, it's looking like a pretty useful idea to pre-order as soon as you possibly can.

Cancer cells have a voracious appetite for this.

Compared to normal cells, cancer cells have a prodigious appetite for glucose. A research team has investigated the reverse aspect: how the metabolism of glucose affects the biochemical signals present in cancer cells. In research published June 26 in the journal Molecular Systems Biology, they demonstrated that glucose starvation -- that is, depriving cancer cells of glucose -- activates a metabolic and signaling amplification loop that leads to cancer cell death as a result of the toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Because cancer cells live on the edge of what is metabolically feasible, this amplifying cycle of oxidative stress ultimately overwhelms and kills the cancer cell. These findings illustrate the delicate balance that exists between metabolism and signaling in the maintenance of cancer cell homeostasis. In addition, the authors showed the possibility of exploiting this positive feedback loop for therapeutic intervention. Combining short-term glucose deprivation with an inhibitor of tyrosine phosphatases, they demonstrated synergistic cell death in a cancer cell line.

Mission Small Business {wanna help?!} - I Heart Nap Time

So over the past year I have been working on developing another site called The Inspiration Board. I had the idea to start this site because there was nothing like it on the web and I knew it would be an amazing tool for creatives like me and you. Once I had the idea, I pondered everything for a few months and then I had the courage to go for it!

{via}

A little background ?(more to come)- SO I ended up investing nearly my entire savings into the new website development. I?literally?had no idea what I was getting myself into. Lol! I worked closely with a new and upcoming developer, however to my surprise several months later he disappeared. He left me with no website and no money. It was all gone.?I was completely crushed.

(on etsy?via)

A few months went by and a friend asked me how the site was going. I told him what happened and that everything was gone. Well that same friend happened to know coding and wanted to help me rebuild this site. I was super excited to find someone I could trust. So that?s where we are today? and it will be better than I had imagined. The Inspiration Board will launch some time this fall and I couldn?t be more thrilled!

{via}

I also am looking to get a few aps made for this site and well? those come with a pretty price tag. A few weeks ago my friend told me about?Mission Small Business. Have you heard of it? Chase and Living Social have partnered up to give 12 small businesses an amazing opportunity for growth. I know I?m a small fish in a big sea but I?d love the opportunity to at least get my essay read.

In order to get my essay read I need at least 250 votes by THIS FRIDAY! I?m only at 65 right now. Yikes! Can you guys help me surpass that number?! :)

It?s super easy to vote- promise! All you need is a facebook account. You won?t have to like any pages or submit an e-mail. It will only take 30 seconds and would mean the world to me! :)

1. Go to?https://www.missionsmallbusiness.com/

2. Hit ?Login and Support? on the bottom right side.

3. Put business name as ? I Heart Nap Time ? and hit search.

4. Then hit vote!

While you can only vote for I Heart Nap Time once, you can vote for as many businesses as you?d like. Support your favorites! I think this is an amazing program and would love to be considered.

{via}

Thank you for your support and most importantly, thank you for believing in me! I?ve said it before and I?ll say it again? I have the best readers! I love you guys!

Thanks for reading. I hope you all have a fabulous day!

?

So did you vote?! ;)

Islamic chief in Arab Egypt: Will women's rights change?

For the first time in Egypt's existence, Mohammed Morsi has become not only the country's first freely elected president, but also the first Islamic head of state in an Arab country.

It's a joyous moment as Egyptians take to the streets to celebrate, but the work to restore democracy is far from over as a tug-of-war for power has just begun between the newly elected president and Egypt's ruling military.

Even though Morsi is president, the Egyptian military still holds all meaningful power including wanting a say in how Egypt's next constitution is written.

But as the situation remains fluid, issues like the treatment of women will serve as a barometer for success. Morsi has promised equal rights for all women, even announcing that he will be selecting a woman as his vice president.

Meizu MX 4-core and Flyme OS 1.0 formally announced, available on June 30th

Meizu MX 4core

Forget that "MX Quad-core" moniker, because Meizu's just formally introduced its first quad core Android phone as the "MX 4-core" in Hong Kong event jam-packed with balloons and local celebrities (we really should've brought our sunglasses). For those who care, this is the first time ever for Meizu to collaborate with a carrier -- that being Hong Kong's PCCW, who's offering the HK$3,099 (US$400) 32GB model for free on various tariffs, while details are light on the HK$4,099 (US$530) 64GB version. Once the stage cleared we had a chance to take a closer look at the international variant of the MX 4-core. Aside from the disappearance of the Chinese logo above the screen plus the duller logo on the back (but accompanied by an extra capacity label), the 4-inch HSPA+ phone looks identical to its dual-core sibling. Additionally, Hong Kong and mainland China customers who pre-order between now and the launch on June 30th will get to pick a colored back crystal shell for free, including ivory white, milky lime, lilac purple and misty pink to replace the original white.

Software-wise Flyme -- Meizu's heavily customized Ice Cream Sandwich -- is also very similar to its Gingerbread predecessor, except for its slicker responsiveness (especially the camera app) and the odd interface tweaks here and there. There are also a few new features that are worth a mention: on top of the new native stopwatch, countdown timer and multi-segmented timed task lists, there's Flyme Voicemail which is essentially a native recorder for incoming calls that you reject (think of it as a neat alternative to conventional visual voicemail), and there's Flyme Message which is Meizu's take on SIP services like Whatsapp and Line. We shall dig deeper in our full review, but for now, you can check out a quick hands-on video after the break. And for those who still possess Meizu's older Android phones, we were told to expect Flyme to be delivered over the air in early July (as opposed to the original June date), so keep an eye out for that little update icon.

Update: We mentioned in our video that the China version of the MX 4-core doesn't come with the Play Store, but it turns out that we were mistaken. Hooray!

Update 2: By the way, it's pronounced "fly-me."

Teacher, 4 students held over alleged hazing

By NBC Los Angeles and news services

FONTANA, Calif. -- A Southern California high school teacher was arrested on suspicion of directing students to assault at least one other student in a classroom hazing incident, police said Sunday.

Emmanuel Delarosa, 27, along with four students were arrested Saturday after a student who said he was a victim of the hazing contacted school police, Fontana police Sgt. Robert Morris said.

Investigators alleged that Delarosa, a summer school teacher at A.B. Miller High School, knew about the hazing ? and in at least one instance directed some students to carry out the hazing to curb behavior problems in the classroom, Morris said.

Police: High school cheerleaders suspended for hazing incident in Utah

He declined to describe the nature of the hazing, citing the ongoing investigation.

At least one student suffered minor injuries, Morris said.

NBC Los Angeles reported that several students has been interviewed by?detectives.

Jail records show that an 18-year-old student arrested in the case faces charges of assault, child cruelty and attempted sodomy. Fernando Manuel Salgado was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

5 found duct-taped: Boston University students under investigation

The names of the other three male students were not released because they are minors. Police said they were arrested for investigation of assault and child endangerment.

Delarosa was booked for investigation of child endangerment and released on bail.

The Associated Press and NBC Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Keeper 5.0 (for Android)

Keeper 5.0 for Android (Free, $9.99 for premium) is a one trick pony, but that trick is decent. Using military-grade (AES-128) encryption, the free version of Keeper locally stores all your usernames and passwords, and lets you easily copy and paste this data into form fields when you launch websites through a dedicated mobile browser. Keeper for Android also syncs with a rather limited desktop client which we haven't reviewed.

But to do anything more with Keeper will cost you. For $9.99 a year, you can store your vault in Keeper's cloud server and sync your vault across more than one device. Editors' Choice password managers LastPass Password Manager Premium (3 stars, free with $12 Premium account)?and Dashlane (free) sync to an unlimited number of devices,?plus offer form fillers if you want to store anything other than usernames and passwords. However newbie Dashlane only offers an iPhone app for now; Android support is expected this July.?

Easy Start
To start, simply enter an email address and master password. From there, you can either add records from within the app or from Keeper's desktop client (which I always find easier with the keyboard and bigger screen). By default, templates only offer four entry fields: username, password, URL, and additional notes. You can customize and add form fields, but the app only auto-fills usernames and passwords.

LastPass and Dashlane have secure form fills where you can enter sensitive info like credit card numbers and social security number, for auto-filling. The latter also handle rare complex logins that might require more than two entry fields. Strangely, Keeper displays your passwords in each record. What if a frenemy is looking over your shoulder while you're using the app? Give us an option to hide the password.

Keeper also has a password generator so you can create very strong passwords for new accounts. It's rather inconveniently located next to each entry field, rather than as an option as you sign up for new accounts through your browser. These records begin to fill up your Data Vault, and you can name folders in which to organize all your records.

Keeper only auto-fills passwords when you use its built-in browser, which loads pretty quickly. Tap and hold on the URL to launch it within the app, but not actually log you in. Instead Keeper displays boxes with your username and password at the top of the screen, and you're supposed to tap one to paste it into each entry field. LastPass and Dashlane can auto-complete when you open URLs within their apps, but they also let you copy and paste data to enter into another browser or app login.?

By default, Keeper locks up after two seconds of inactivity. You can adjust this to up to 60 seconds. Keeper also "self-destructs," or wipes out your vault, after five failed login attempts.

Poor Premium Feature
For $9.99 a year you can back up your vault to Keeper's cloud (for in case you lose your device), sync across iOS, BlackBerry, and desktop, and receive 24/7 help desk support. However, each subscription only works on one operating system, so if you want to sync your accounts across your iPad and Galaxy Nexus that'll cost you $20. LastPass offers free cloud storage and multi-device syncing. Dashlane is also free to use and works on a badge/point-based upgrading system, but unfortunately it won't support Android until July, and BlackBerry isn't in the cards yet. ?

Not Yet a Keeper
Keeper is a solid app for storing usernames and passwords on a single Android device, but that's about it. It lacks features offered for free by password manager apps LastPass and Dashlane, such as form fillers, complex logins, multi-device syncing, and cloud backup. Keeper does offer one of the more user-friendly interfaces for a mobile password manager, so hopefully it'll add steak to its sizzle.

AP IMPACT: AP trip finds Syria rebels without leader, disorganized, willing to kill prisoners

SARJEH, Syria - Rebel commander Ahmed Eissa al-Sheikh keeps a paper on his desk bearing the names of the dead from his brigade. The first 16 are neatly typed below a Quranic verse extolling martyrdom. The next 14 are handwritten and crammed into the margin, because the paper is full.

Al-Sheikh, an Islamist with a long black beard and grey fatigues, runs the Falcons of Damascus group from the mayor's office in his village, which his fighters have taken over. The list is a constant reminder of al-Sheikh's personal score with the Syrian regime: 20 of the dead are his relatives, including three brothers and his 16-year-old son, all killed fighting Syrian forces in the last year.

One of northern Syria's most powerful and best-armed commanders, Al-Sheikh boasts more than 1,000 fighters, and they don't shy away from rougher tactics themselves. They have released prisoners in bomb-laden cars and then detonated them at army checkpoints ? turning the drivers into unwitting suicide bombers.

Most of their weapons are booty, including at least two anti-aircraft guns, some anti-tank missiles and one tank, but they buy arms with donations from "honourable businessmen." Although al-Sheikh, who ran a grocery store before the uprising, wouldn't disclose the source or amount, he gets enough to pay some of his men monthly salaries of about $25, slightly more for those with wives and children. His fighters say the cash comes from Syrian expatriates and other Arabs. He was heard on the phone thanking a group in Bahrain.

"God willing, Syria will not bow to anyone but Allah after the regime falls," he said.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE: Journalist Ben Hubbard was part of a three-member Associated Press team that spent two weeks with rebels in northern Syria, gathering firsthand information on the increasingly bloody rebellion against President Bashar Assad ? the longest and deadliest uprising of the Arab Spring.

___

Al-Sheikh is one face of the rebel movement in Syria. There are many more.

During two weeks in northern Syria, three Associated Press journalists counted more than 20 rebel groups, with anywhere from fewer than 100 to more than 1,000 fighters each. They go by names like the Idlib Martyrs Brigade and the Shield of the Revolution, and while all share a deep hatred of President Bashar Assad's regime, their unity stops there.

Simply put, no one is in charge.

This comes at a time when efforts to end 15 months of strife in Syria are collapsing, and the rebel movement has taken the lead in the struggle against Assad. Some countries have talked of boosting the rebels' capabilities against the regime, and U.S. officials have told the AP that U.S. operatives are sifting among the rebel groups to determine which should receive arms from other Arab nations.

Rebel co-ordination rarely extends beyond neighbouring towns and villages and never to the provincial or national level. Many rebels don't even know the commanders in towns two hours away.

While the regime has been brutal, so have some of the rebels ? another cause of concern for the West.

Opposition activists filter most information about the rebels sent outside the country, making it hard to get an accurate picture. But several groups said they had sent captured soldiers "to Cyprus," which the rebels use as a euphemism for execution usually by gunfire.

One group said it had killed two brothers caught collaborating with the regime ? one during interrogation, the other by firing squad.

Rebels have scored small victories against regime forces throughout Syria's northern Idlib province. Armed with bought, looted or homemade weapons, they have destroyed government army posts and littered main highways with charred army vehicles.

In the countryside, they roam freely in much more territory than was previously known, their bearded, camouflaged gunmen on motorcycles zipping through strings of towns and villages with no remaining police or security presence. Children often hail the fighters with V-for-victory signs and calls of "May God protect you!"

But Syria's army retains a chokehold on many large towns and cities with tanks, attack helicopters and heavy artillery, weapons that the rebels' current arms can't challenge.

Indeed, more than two dozen rebel commanders, fighters and activists said that without better arms they can do no more than chip away at the regime ? a recipe for a long, deadly insurgency.

"If we get military aid, the end will come quickly," said Ahmed Abdel-Qader, a rebel co-ordinator in the village of Koreen. "If not, we have no idea how this will end. We are here. We're not going back. God will decide the rest."

Even groups associated with the Free Syrian Army, which claims to represent the armed opposition, bemoan the failure of its Turkey-based leadership to deliver aid. While they wait, most rely on guerrilla tactics.

One afternoon, 50 fighters in a vast olive grove crawled under barbed wire, leaped over oil drums and dove through flaming hoops in training for future attacks. Most were in their 20s and 30s and had fled the provincial capital of Idlib when the army seized it in March. Their rifles can't match the tanks guarding the city, and they can't afford better weapons.

Commander Maan Dahnin said a Kalashnikov rifle now costs $1,500 and bullets are $4 each. That's why when they lined up for target practice, most fighters fired only a few times.

Some weapons come from neighbouring Iraq, though many are duds, and some from Turkey, he said. The best come from corrupt officers in the Syrian army itself.

"There are those who worry that the regime is going to fall, so they want to fill their pockets first," Dahnin said.

For now, his group's 1,000 men never gather in one place, so that if they are shelled or come under fire, not everyone will die. Meanwhile, they focus on roadside bombs built with dynamite, sugar and fertilizer and detonated by remote control.

Like most rebel commanders, Dahnin said his group gets no outside support.

"Here's the biggest proof," he said, pointing to a fighter wearing plastic flip-flops. "He's only good for one thing: toothpaste advertisements," he said, prying open the man's mouth to reveal a row of rotten teeth.

The conflict in Syria has already killed more than 14,000 people and appears headed for civil war. The Syrian government has ignored popular demands for reform, instead blaming the violence on armed gangs and foreign-backed terrorists. Others have warned against an influx of Islamists. The AP journalists saw no evidence of foreign fighters.

The uprising reached Idlib in April 2011, about a month after Syrian protesters inspired by other Arab Spring revolts first took to the streets and faced violent security crackdowns.

The protests started small in Ariha, a busy commercial centre on the face of a round-topped mountain, but residents were shocked when regime forces shot and killed five protesters in one day, said Khalid Naif, a doctor. Many more people then joined in, armed first with hunting guns and later with attack rifles.

A year ago, the army surrounded the city and took over a downtown building, paralyzing the city centre, Naif said. He easily named many of the dozens of people he has treated for gunshot and shrapnel wounds since. Others died before reaching the clinic.

Early this month, when a military convoy arrived to quash the city's opposition, rebel fighters blew up tanks and armoured cars in a hail of gunfire and grenades and stormed the army position downtown.

Weeks later, battle scars remain. Three destroyed tanks sit in the main boulevard, their tops blown off like bottle caps. The former army post is charred black, and walls of nearby buildings are pockmarked with bullet holes.

Graffiti on one wall reads, in English, "The people wants SOS." Elsewhere: "We bow only for God."

But the rebel victory was limited. Some stores have reopened and shoppers have returned to downtown, but a ring of army checkpoints restricts movement in and out, forcing many residents to sneak out on foot. Military helicopters and snipers still target the city, wounding more people every week.

The city's rebel commander, Jamal Akta, who ran a unisex barber shop before the uprising, said the battle had killed 10 civilians and no rebels. While proud of the fight, he said his men could do no more.

"If we get more weapons, we can get rid of all the checkpoints," he said. "But the ammunition we have now is enough to defend the city, no more than that."

A ring of checkpoints with a central army post full of snipers and armoured vehicles also strangles Khan Sheikhoun, a dusty, sun-baked city further south, on the country's main north-south highway. Local rebels can't clear out the army, so they blast military vehicles on the highway with rocket-propelled grenades. Two destroyed armoured vehicles, one still on its trailer, now lie in the road, and local fighters say the army has changed its route.

"We can't face the regime as an army face to face, so we have to fight like street gangs," said Waddah Sirmani, head of one of the town's half-dozen rebel brigades.

Fighters have also surrounded the central base and fire on supply vehicles to keep the soldiers inside hungry and short of ammunition, he said.

"You could say that those soldiers are imprisoned among us," said activist Hisham Nijim.

Almost all the rebels the AP journalists met were from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, and many consider the fight a religious cause. When asked what they are fighting for, most said they are fed up with corruption, harassment by security services and a system that gives preference to members of the ruling Baath party and the Alawite sect, to which Assad belongs. The word they used most often was dignity.

"If I go to the beach, I don't want an Alawite to call me a dog and I can't respond," said Ahmed Salim, 27, who left the police for the rebels in October. "I don't want to be treated like an animal. I want to be treated like a human."

Most fighters said they did not target other sects, only those who had fought for the regime.

There was little evidence of rebel attacks on civilians, but they were often merciless with regime troops. For most, the fight to topple Assad has become personal after they have been chased from their cities, their friends and relatives killed. Many frequently flip through "martyr" photos on their cellphones for inspiration.

One night at al-Sheikh's headquarters in Sarjeh, a group of fighters flipped through brigade photos on a laptop.

"Martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr," they said, pointing out those who had died fighting.

Videos of the group's attacks showed roadside bombs destroying tanks and flipping over army buses, as Islamic chanting played in the background. In one video, a booby-trapped van sped toward a checkpoint and blew up, splattering two soldiers into nearby trees.

The group was still high on a recent attack that had destroyed a military camp nearby. In the end, they photographed the dead bodies of 35 soldiers, drove off a tank they now park under a tree in the village graveyard and held trials for five captured soldiers. All were found guilty of killing other Syrians.

"They travelled to Cyprus," al-Sheikh said with a grin. "On a fast plane."
